Frequently asked questions

Are you a moving company?

Yes — Boston House Movers is a fully licensed and insured local moving company based in Lynn, MA. We run our own trucks and uniformed crews on every job, with MA DPU and USDOT/MC authority on file.

How much does a local move cost?

Local moves start at $149 per hour for a two-mover crew, including the truck, blankets, and basic tools. Most one to two bedroom apartments take two to four hours. Three-bedroom houses typically run four to six hours. We also offer flat-rate written quotes after a walkthrough or virtual estimate.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend two to three weeks for weekend moves. Weekday and mid-month dates can often be booked with just a few days notice. We do accommodate last-minute and same-day moves when crew availability allows.

Do you handle long-distance moves?

Yes. We hold interstate USDOT and MC authority for long-distance relocations from Lynn and Greater Boston to anywhere in the continental US. Long-distance jobs get binding flat-rate quotes and GPS tracking on every load.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry $1M cargo liability coverage on every move. Full Value Protection is available as a paid upgrade. We are bonded and carry general liability and workers compensation. COIs for condo associations and HOAs are issued same-day.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?

We ask for 48 hours notice for cancellations at no charge. Reschedules are free as long as the new date is available.

Do I need to be there on moving day?

We strongly recommend being present at both origin and destination, but you can designate an authorized representative if needed. We do a walkthrough inventory at pickup and a sign-off at delivery either way.

What valuation coverage options do you offer?
Every move includes basic Released Value Protection at no charge — 60 cents per pound per article. Full Value Protection is available as a paid upgrade (typically $30–$80 depending on declared value) and covers repair, replacement, or cash settlement at current market value. We recommend FVP for any household with items worth more than $5,000 total.
Do you move pianos, safes, or other heavy items?
Yes. We move upright and grand pianos, gun safes, marble tables, pool tables, and other specialty items. These require specific equipment (piano board, heavy-duty straps, custom crating) and a crew trained for the weight and balance involved. Let us know during the estimate so we bring the right gear and enough hands.
Can you provide a Certificate of Insurance for my building?
Yes — same-day COIs for condo associations, HOAs, and property management companies. We carry $1M general liability and workers compensation. Just send us the building management contact and any specific insurance requirements, and we will have the COI emailed directly to them before move day.
How should I tip the movers?
Tipping is not required but is appreciated. The standard range in the Boston area is $20–$40 per mover for a local move, or $40–$80 per mover for a long-distance job. Cash handed directly to each crew member at the end of the move is preferred. If you are not carrying cash, buying the crew lunch or cold drinks during the job is always welcome.
Do you offer packing services?
Yes — we offer full-pack and partial-pack options. Full pack means our crew wraps, boxes, and labels everything in the house. Partial pack lets you handle the easy stuff (clothes, linens) while we pack fragile items (kitchen, artwork, electronics). All packing materials — boxes, paper, bubble wrap, tape — are included in the packing quote.
What areas do you serve?
We serve Lynn and the entire North Shore — Peabody, Salem, Saugus, Swampscott, Marblehead, Revere, Nahant, and surrounding towns. For long-distance moves, we are USDOT-authorized to move anywhere in the continental United States. See our service areas page for the full list of neighborhoods we cover.
